The Football Alliance was formed in 1889 as an
alternative to the 12-strong Football League, which was then entering into its
second season. The Alliance ran
successfully for three seasons until a merger with the Football League in 1892.
The Alliance clubs formed the bulk of the new Second Division.
The
authors are pleased to see this book in print after some ten years’ effort to
trace nearly all line-ups and goal scorers for the Alliance clubs in each of the
three seasons. Among the
lesser-known clubs such as Birmingham St George and Bootle will be found the
details of the first League experience of clubs such as Manchester United (then
known as Newton Heath) and Manchester City (then Ardwick).
A full list of players is included in the book, with details of date and
place of birth when known, and previous and next clubs.
Notes on another early League, the Combination of 1888/89 are also
included.
