The 1939-40 season was halted after three games by the outbreak of the Second World War.  After a few weeks, friendly matches were permitted and later a full set of regional leagues were formed.  The wartime conditions proved difficult for the clubs; many players were on active service duties and others were working in reserved occupations.  Consequently, finding 11 men to play in a game, and finding transport to get to the ground, sometimes proved difficult.

Tim's book provides a narrative account of the war seasons.  There are profiles of the leading players and full match facts.
