A little out of the ordinary for Soccerdata, since Goole Town's career was all non-League, with one visit to the Third Round of the F.A. Cup in 1957. That game has particular resonance for your publisher, since I was in attendance: Nottingham Forest 6, Goole Town 0. The day remains fresh in my memory; it had a 2.45pm kick-off since Notts County were also drawn at home, to Rhyl, with a 3.15pm start time. With Forest well ahead in the second half I decided to leave early to see how Notts were getting on. Alas, I found them 1-2 down, which is how it ended. Many of us in 1950's Nottingham supported both clubs, enjoying Second Division football at either ground. However, I've always considered that 5th January 1957 was a turning point in the history of the two clubs; Forest went on to win promotion that season, County went the other way the following one.
Anyway, back to Goole. The author and I would like to emphasize that the book is written with the intention that all proceeds will contribute to the important work on Alzheimer's. If any buyer wants to add a pound or two to the purchase price we can guarantee that it will all go to the charity.
Goole Town kicked off in 1903 as Goole Amateurs, had a break from 1916 to 1924, and died in 1996 deep in debt. A phoenix club Goole AFC launched in 1997 and continues to this day. For each of Town's seasons, Martin provides a commentary on events, and a comprehensive list of league and cup results and scorers. Line-ups of some important fixtures are included. Final league tables and several pages of team group pictures complete the contents. The book's title is a riff on their stadium, the Victoria Pleasure Grounds.
