British and Irish Special and Intermediate Internationals

Edited by Keith Warsop

This collection offers for the first time together in print the team line-ups for special internationals and what we have termed intermediate internationals played by the four British home countries plus the Republic of Ireland.  The phrase “intermediate internationals” was coined by the Sunday Chronicle Football Annual (now the News of the World Annual) in the early 1950s to cover Under-23 and B games, so it refers to those below “full” status but at senior level, and therefore excludes amateur, youth and schoolboy internationals.  Under-21 internationals have also been reluctantly left out for reasons of space; there are now so many of these that they will need a separate volume of their own.

It is believed that all Under-23 and B internationals by the five countries of Britain and Ireland against other countries are given here.  Special international matches involving “supranational” teams (e.g. Great Britain v Rest of Europe; The Three v The Six “Common Market match”) are included even if they have sometimes been granted “full” status by the national side involved (England v Rest of Europe; Wales v Rest of United Kingdom) on the basis that details of these combined sides are not easily available.  Some 430 matches are included.

The price of the book is £10 including postage and packing, and is available by mail order from 4 Adrian Close, Beeston, Nottingham NG9 6FL.  Cheques should be made payable to Tony Brown.
