Illustrated
An unusual book. It is a "who's who", offering short biographies of the 500 men that played for the club prior to joining the Football League in 1892. However, the author feels these items have to be set in the context of the time, so there are also essays on topics such as:
* amateurs and professionals
* the changing face of Nottingham
* the grounds where matches were played
* other Nottingham clubs of the time
* the laws of the game
There are line-up and scorer details for F.A. Cup ties and the matches against local rivals Notts County. Results of other games are included. There's a light-hearted quiz, for which some knowledge of former Nottingham shops is useful. There is a short index to the book, allowing you (for example) to trace the different ways in which these splendid gentlemen died.
