South Shields were elected to the Second Division of the Football League in 1919, and held their place until relegation in 1928. Their best season resulted in sixth place in 1922. With a general decline in attendances the directors decided on a move to Gateshead in 1930. Later Shields clubs are not the subject of this book, except for full list of these clubs results in the F.A. Cup.

Garth Dykes has looked into the career of all the first-team players at the club. Many of the men left little mark on the game’s history, but some had interesting careers at the club and elsewhere. Full back Warney Cresswell won an England cap whilst at the club. The book provides their personal details and an account of their playing career.
