The focus of this book is on some 500 players that represented Stockport in Football League and FA Cup matches to 1939. The club joined the Football League in 1900, and Garth has also included details of players that made F.A. Cup appearances from December 1893 onwards.

Starting out as Heaton Norris Rovers in 1883, the club became Stockport County in 1890. Their nickname "The Hatters" reflected the town's hat-making industry in Victorian times. The club pottered along in the lower reaches of Division Two until relegated in 1921. They bounced back immediately, finishing as Champions of the Third Division Northern Section in 1922. Four seasons near the bottom of Division Two then ended with relegation in 1926, returning them to the Third Division until they were champions again in 1937. Alas, 1937-38 found them bottom of the table and back in Division Three when the Second War broke out in 1939. Their best performance in the F.A. Cup came in 1934-35, beating Division Two teams from West Ham United and Bradford City before losing 0-5 in a home tie with top tier West Bromwich Albion.
