What began with an anonymous accusation (which some suggest developed from a local rivalry) culminated in the suspension of approximately 400 players and officials from North Eastern amateur clubs, led to a paralysis of competitive football in Durham, a court battle for the Durham Challenge Cup, the suspension of an entire county football association and became a real threat to the survival of the Northern League.  With the FA locked in bitter debate with FIFA over broken-time payments to amateur players, it seems the game in Durham became embroiled in a wider political battle.
