Wigan Borough FC were founder members of the Football League’s Third Division North in 1921. After suffering financial losses and with an uninspiring playing record they resigned from the League in 1931, becoming the first club to drop out mid-season.

Borough followed a series of Wigan association football clubs that struggled to survive in a town where a rugby league was well-established.  Only today's Wigan Athletic, founded soon after the demise of Borough, has been able to stay in business.

Author Garth Dykes has looked into the playing careers of all the men who played for Borough in the Football League and has written a detailed account of their careers.  Full line-ups and scorers grids are included.  The book is well illustrated with player photographs and team groups.
