Soccer Data Catalogue

June 2002: this issue of the catalogue supersedes all previous versions.

Raw data files

Soccer Data provides of databases of English and Scottish League and Cup results.  They are supplied as “raw” data files for you to analyse and process however you wish.  You need a database or a spreadsheet, or will be able to write your own programs.

The database files described in this catalogue are supplied in dBASE or ASCII comma delimited format.  dBASE format can be used by spreadsheets such as Excel and databases such as Access.  Specify ASCII format if you plan to use a word processor or write your own programs.

The prices quoted are for a single user licence.  The databases are sold for private use on a single computer.  The licence terms are included later in this catalogue.  You need a different licence to use the data commercially, on more than one computer, build it into a program of your own, or use it on the Internet.  Ask me for details.  All prices quoted are inclusive of media, postage and packing.

The “Pools Pack”

A special package consisting of the last ten complete seasons is available for £20.  The databases include the results of the games and the dates they were played.  Twelve character club names are used throughout.  The results comprise the Premier League and Football League, the Scottish League, the “rounds proper” (round one onwards) of the F.A. Cup and the Scottish F.A. Cup, the Football League Cup and the Scottish League Cup.  End of season League tables are included.  Documents covering a brief history of the competitions and a full description of the file formats are provided as ASCII text files on disc.

The data is supplied with separate files for each competition.  Some 2 Mb of hard disk space is required.

Update Service

League results from the current season are supplied free of charge, up to the date of despatch of the order.   A special weekly or monthly update service is available by post or electronic mail.  A one-off charge of £22 per season is made for the weekly e-mail service.  Each postal delivery on disc costs £5, so please specify the frequency required.

The English Football League and Premier League 1888/89 to 2001/02

The contents of the records in the database are the season in which the game was played, the division of the League, home and away clubs, final score and the date (held in numeric form as YYYYMMDD).  12 character club names are used.  Present day club names are used throughout (for example, Newton Heath’s results are listed under Manchester United).

The database includes only those games that contributed to final League tables.  Therefore excluded are abandoned games, those of season 1939/40, test matches, play-offs, the expunged records of Accrington Stanley, Wigan Borough and Aldershot, and the Scunthorpe v. Exeter game of 1973/74, which was never played.

The results of Division 3 1920/21 are included with those of Division 3 (South).  The Premier League is included with the Football League Division One results.  The “new” (1992/93 onward) Divisions 1, 2, and 3 of the Football League are included with the former Divisions 2, 3, and 4.  Prices are as follows:

The complete results                      £40

Any division complete (1,2,3,4,3S or 3N)   £15

Any League club’s complete results                      £5

Any Season                          £5

The F.A. Cup 1871/72 to 2001/02

Additional fields (to the League data) are used in this database to indicate details such as “extra time”, “won on penalties”, “neutral ground” etc.  Dates of games are not included, but I can supply a chart of “dates of each round” on request.  Club names are “those in use at the time”, so (for example) Manchester United also appear as Newton Heath.
