The Associate Members Cup is for the members of the former Divisions 3 and 4 of the Football League, now Divisions 2 and 3 of course. It is currently sponsored by the LDV Vans company. Until the re-organiation of the League in 1993, clubs in the top two divisions had one vote each, but division 3 and 4 clubs had just 4 votes between them; hence the title "associate members". And yes, there was a "Full Members" Cup, which ran from 1985/86 to 1991/92.
The Associate Members Cup was initially organised into 16 mini-leagues of three clubs, who played each other to decide which clubs went through to the knock out stages. In 1995/96, group 16 finished with the three clubs having identical records; Bradford City were eliminated by the drawing of lots. The knock out phase was played in regions (north and south) to save travelling costs, leaving a club from each region to play in the final at Wembley Stadium.
In 1996/97, the competition became a straight knock out tournament, still played in regions, and with some clubs given byes to round 2. In 2000/2001 seven clubs from the Nationwide Conference also played in the competition.
The competition has been played under a number of sponsor's names, as follows:
1984/85 to 1986/87 Freight Rover Trophy
1987/88 to 1988/89 Sherpa Van Trophy
